The ScotPEN Wellcome Engagement Award (SWEA) invites applications from researchers holding a Wellcome Trust research grant.

SWEA is a pilot scheme that funds Wellcome grantholders in Scotland to engage the public with their research. It replaces Wellcome’s Research Enrichment: Public Engagement funding scheme in Scotland (this Wellcome blog explains why). Phase 2 of SWEA was announced in August 2020 and includes two further funding calls:

Round 3: Opens Monday 2nd November 2020 – closes Monday 1st February 2021.

Round 4: Opens June 2021 – closes October 2021.

Please check with your institutional public engagement team for any earlier internal deadline.

We normally expect to make awards of between £5,000 and £100,000. Partnership working and inter-institutional collaborative applications are encouraged within the SWEA scheme. Early careers researchers are eligible to apply as named co-applicants or project partners. The end date for this award must be no later than that of your main Wellcome grant.

You are encouraged to contact your central public engagement team early in the process for guidance and support with your application. Your application must be submitted by email to your institutional public engagement contact, who will pass it to SWEA's administrative team. If your local contact is not listed below please contact scotpen-wellcome-engagement-award@glasgow.ac.uk for further information.

This is a competitive call and applications will be assessed by a panel of engagement experts and researchers, with peer review invited for larger projects. Guidance notes and an application form are provided. If you decide to apply, please ensure you have also read the supplementary information document, which outlines eligible activities and costs and explains the assessment criteria. Our PEP checklist is designed to help public engagement professionals ensure applications are ready for submission.

The SWEA team is keen for any input regarding training needs. To feed back on this or for other queries, please contact scotpen-wellcome-engagement-award@glasgow.ac.uk.
